Charlotte 49er Student Athlete Advisory Committee

Bylaws & Policies

 

I.                     Purpose

The purpose of the Charlotte 49er Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to allow the student-athletes to express ideas, concerns and opinions relating to University policies and other issues that directly affect them; to explain and discuss NCAA and Conference USA legislation in order for the student-athletes to have a clear understanding of these procedures and to maintain an environment that promotes a positive experience and a healthy relationship between student-athletes and administrators.  Also to foster an environment where teams support teams and promote the Charlotte 49er spirit.

 

II.                   Structure/Organization

The SAAC consists of representatives from each sport (one representative for every 10 members of the team) along with one freshman.   Track is to elect one representative for each event specialty.  There will be three subcommittees:  Outreach Subcommittee; Sprit Subcommittee; Social Subcommittee.

 

III.                 Selection Process

Each sport must select an athlete to serve a yearlong term.  The coaches are strongly encouraged to allow each team to select their own representatives.  A President, Vice President and Secretary are elected annually.  Also there are subcommittee chairs elected on an annual basis.

 

IV.                Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this group are outlined below:

A.      Discuss all relevant matters discussed in meetings with coaches and teams.

B.       Discuss and recommend positions of University issues that affect student-athletes.

C.       Explain and discuss proposed and passed NCAA legislation.

D.      Review and discuss Conference regulations.

E.       Participate in activities with official charity – Special Olympics.

F.       Participate in activities sponsored by the SAAC.

G.       Assist the athletic administration, coaches and student-athletes in promoting excellence in Conference USA through the promotion of sportsmanship.

H.      Serve as a sounding board for student athlete welfare issues.

I.         Continue to offer ideas in order to expand events that the committee sponsors.

J.        Assist the Life Skills Coordinator with programming ideas and feedback along with stressing the importance of the life skills program – particularly the athletic sponsored life skills events to the team.

K.      Participate in fundraising activities for the SAAC.

 

V.                  Meetings

Meetings are scheduled as necessary in order to discuss current or pending issues.  A minimum of four full SAAC meetings per semester will be held.  Subcommittees are expected to meet on their own throughout the semester to work on the subcommittee’s area of responsibility and report back to the full SAAC.

 

VI.                Attendance Policy

Each SAAC member is expected to participate fully in all meetings and events sponsored by the SAAC.  SAAC members will be dismissed from the committee if they miss more than one meeting per semester with an unexcused absence.  Misses for class, practice and competition are excused.  Coaches will receive updates following each meeting that includes who was in attendance.
